Connecting equipment issues - Kickr Snap and more

Hello!

I have recently purchased Wahoo Kickr Snap and currently trying to find a good app for my needs.
I saw the reference to TrainerDay on DC Rainmaiker discussions and thought that it might be great app to try out.
Installing it on Android tablet - it looks good, but I run into issues connecting trainer - I have ANT USB stick, but for some reason TrainerDay persists on connecting to Kickr Snap via BLE only and does not see ANT+ channels (FE-C and Power) it broadcasts… But I need BLE for the trainer to connect to my Polar watch… Interestingly, apps has no issue pairing to my generic cadence sensor over ANT (and sensor also has BLE channel)…
To add insult to the injury, I couldn’t connect HRM which is broadcast by Polar over BLE either…
This is sad, because I like the app and surprised it can’t handle configuration other apps have no issue with (yes, I am able to set things up the way I need with Rouvy and Bkool on the same tablet).

Any advice on how to connect trainer over ANT and HRV via BLE would be appreciated!

Hi, sorry about your issues. I would start with re-installing our app. Make sure you allow location services. If that does not work and you are willing to work with us we will fix this. I know we have other snap users and my and polar hr and many others works fine.

Hello!

Thanks for the prompt response!
I tried reinstalling just to make sure I follow your suggestion, I wasn’t expecting it to fix anything - after all, as I mention, several other apps work fine on the tablet I am using in the configuration I need.
I was actually able to connect Polar watch via BLE, it is just a bit tricky on the first pairing - depends on sequence of initiating pairing from the watch. Once paired, things are better next time.

So what’s left is pairing Kickr Snap FE-C over ANT - this I couldn’t do. It only shows it in as Bluetooth device:

You can see here:

  • device 61961 is separate cadence sensor with BLE and ANT+ channels
  • device 29416 is power channel from Kickr Snap over ANT+
  • Kickr Snap 72E8 is Bluetooth channel for the trainer

What is missing is FE-C ANT+ channel for the trainer.

When I connect in the following config (this now includes Polar Pacer Pro over BLE):

I am no longer able to connect trainer to watch, because it only supports Bluetooth.

With other apps I tested, I can select FE-C ANT+ for the trainer making all setup working the way I need it.

I’d be glad to work together on finding a solution here - as I said, I like the application simplicity.

Oh we do it differently. We only show a single connection for power and trainer control. If you just select your trainer it should just work as expected from BLE. Why do you need Ant+? Also even though it says power for Ant+ connecting to it might do everything. Did you try that? It might just be a bug in what it shows, not how it works.

Hi!

I am not sure I completely understand what are you doing “differently”.
Kickr Snap has three separate channels. Your application shows only two of them, hiding or ignoring FE-C ANT+ one…

Answers:

  1. Why I need ANT+ for the trainer: I thought explained already couple of times, I need BLE connection to Polar watch because I want to keep my training properly recorded in Polar ecosystem, this is only possible if control application uses ANT+
  2. The channel which says “Cycling Power” is just that - power broadcast from the trainer, I’ll include screenshots from Rouvy below to show this, but connecting using that channel does not let your application control trainer resistance (obviously - and I tested it).

Snap FE-C:

Snap Power:

And BLE channel is the last in the list. there - that’s what TrainerDay app is only capable of using, it seems…

Oh I see on Ant+. Yes, we always try to merge the different channels into one, or only show one to connect to on our UI. Other apps like Zwift need to show them separately. We maybe showing power but that may include FEC. Did you try to only connect to Ant+ and see if it controls your trainer? When I say 1 I mean 1 BLE and 1 Ant+

Also, if you connect to that Ant+ and it does not control your trainer then I would be happy for you to meet with my developer to fix it. We should fix it anyway even if it does control it just to make sure it says the right thing.

Yes, that’s what I did to test and confirm the issue - I connected to Power channel, but there was no control.

It would be great if you can allow the user to select which control channel to connect when both ANT+ and BLE are present. Merging channels “looks” great and easy for some users, reducing confusion, but hurts flexibility when more advanced configuration is necessary.

I am open to work together to improve handling of this type of configuration.

In apps like Zwift where you might want external control it makes sense but we have not seen a use case where our priority model does not work, or no one has said anything. In your case this just seems like a bug but I am not sure why, maybe specific to snap and ant+ I believe we have tested other wahoos and ant+ I have one but don’t remember if I tested this on Wahoo or not.

Thanks so much for your offer to help fix this. Contact me at support@trainerday.com and we will get this fixed.

Thank you so much for your willingness to help! I have sent an email as you requested.
