Platform: iPadOS 18.4 on iPad Pro 12,9" 5th generation
Issues:
Random Crashes: The application crashes randomly during exercises. Relaunching the app allows to continue the exercise, but this causes interruptions in trainer and heart rate monitoring. Note that so far I had one single similar issue on iOS.
Apple Watch Connection Failure (Direct): The application fails to connect directly to an Apple Watch for heart rate data. A workaround using a third-party phone app (such as HeartCast) to emulate a Bluetooth heart rate monitor with the phone is required. No issue on the iOS app.
Apple Watch App Connection Failure: The iPadOS application does not connect to its corresponding Apple Watch companion app. No issue on the iOS app.
Apple Fitness Integration Failure: Completed exercises are not saved or logged in the Apple Fitness app. No issue on the iOS app.
Oh that’s the first time I have heard of this. I see that iPad is M1 powered…
I am a little confused. It seems like you are talking about iOS different than your iPad?
Did you check apple health permissions on the iPad for TrainerDay? This is the main reason the watch does not work, is wrong permissions in apple health or no apple health installed.
What I meant to say is that I’m experiencing these issues on iPadOS, but not on iOS (apart from a single random crash yesterday). This leads me to believe the problem is iPad-specific, as iOS generally behaves correctly.
I checked Apple Health parameters and rechecked now, all is activated on iPad:
Yes, I think this is more likely M series iPad issue, as older ones seem ok. Maybe we need to buy one for testing. I will ask my developer if he can see anything.
I’m not sure. I plan to do a training tomorrow, I’ll try with the IPad and let you know.
For information, session I did last Sunday was with the iPad (screenshots in the first post are from it), and the one on Tuesday was with the iPhone (only one random crash, otherwise OK).
Following our last discussion, I’ve updated my setup: I am now using my iPhone for TrainerDay and my iPad for multimedia during cycling. So I didn’t retried on the iPad since 23th April.
As previously mentioned, the iOS experience is generally smoother, benefiting from proper integration with Apple Health/Fitness and connectivity with my Apple Watch and the companion app.
However, I continue to experience random interruptions/crashes, even with the iPhone. These are similar to the issues on the iPad but less frequent.
For example, during today’s 20-minute activity , there were three such events. See image below:
When this happens, the app closes unexpectedly. I have to reopen it, but in doing so, the connection to my hometrainer and watch is lost, causing data to drop to zero.
It connects via the Bluetooth Low Energy (FTMS) protocol and does not support ANT+. I had no issues with Zwift when I used that app (for several weeks), and I also tested it with GymTrackr in the past without issues (though not extensively tested).
Ok so this issue is likely a combination of our app and your trainer. For some reason we seem to have a few more issues with some spin bikes, I think partially most smart trainers/bikes the protocol is a bit more standardized. Other big apps like Zwift have testing departments with every bike under the sun.
I looked at our logs but don’t see any error messages but I will have my developer look at the apple logs and see if he can find it or what he suggests.
Just wanted to provide an update. I completed another training session today, this time using a Garmin HRM Dual band as the heart rate sensor instead of my Apple Watch. Unfortunately, I still experienced two crashes in the first ten minutes:
As I said previously, I am now using my iPhone (13 Pro Max) for TrainerDay and my iPad for multimedia during cycling. So today’s crashes were on the iPhone (like the ones on 23rd Apr).
