New to trainer day, but old to indoor training. I typically pair 3 things: my Wahoo Kickr, stages PM (single sided), and wahoo tickr hrm. When I pair the stages, it sees it as a power meter, but when it actually pairs it shows as a “Smart Trainer” (see screenshot). Is this normal?
I ask because the power seems to be off a bit… wondering if there is any additional settings I need to configure to read power from my Stages to drive resistance during workouts.
We have heard of this before. It seems rare and I am not sure if it might be inconsistent that people have said they have seen this but then it shows up correctly as a power meter. Yes it’s possible this can cause issues, it won’t control your kickr correctly or if it does then power match may not work correctly. Let me see if my developer has any ideas. I think we would need to fix this. You could try un-pairing and restarting our app and re-pairing. If you would be willing to work with my developer we could resolve this quickly.
It appears my developer was fixing an issue another user had and created this problem. We will have to fix this but it might take a few weeks, hopefully not longer. It should work ok but just power match won’t work. Usually a Kickr is reasonably accurate enough but I realize if you want apples to apples as compared to outdoor using the stages will likely make it closer.
Yes actually this is 100% correct/normal. Wahoo has some amazing power smoothing applied to the output power when using ERG mode so it looks beautiful. and pedeal or crank power meters just report the raw actual power (from single side usually). So as you can imagine the force you are applying to a pedal changes through out the stroke and even more so with a single side so power is very variable. Wahoo is the only one with this level of smoothing. A tacx neo looks more like your stages power meter for example. We still are working on this issue with stages looking like smart trainer but we actually have to re-design our app to work more like how zwift does it.
Right now your power meter is reading as smart trainer so I would say the only way would be to dual record at the moment (one to garmin or wahoo). We are working on a fix but I just hired a new developer to help work on this and it will take him a bit of time to get up to speed so this is not a quick fix for us.
