Outdoor Workouts Wahoo

Currently on a CJ training plan and loving it so far. I have used other systems and so far TD and CJ have kept me progressing and balanced as opposed to exhausted and unmotivated.

I have read some posts regarding outdoor workouts, particularly with Garmin. While i do push workouts to TP then to my Wahoo the workouts are not adjusted for outdoor rides. I can work with this and generally try to keep to the “spirit of the effort” but it would be nice if workouts can be adjusted to better suit outdoor rides.

This is getting to be a top priority. I wish we could have gotten it done before the weather started getting nice. It might take a few more weeks to finish up what we are working on and start this. Thanks for such a nice way of asking for this

Hey Alex,

Thanks for the reply, I love your personal communication and involvement/dedication in the platform. Happy to hear you are working on this development.

Ive just been so happy with TD, the philosophy really seems to work for me. So many great things to say about it and i am sure I am only scratching the surface of TD current capability. Honestly after using SYSTM and TR, then finding no “home” in Zwift or the other “simulation” platforms, TD was the one that pulled me out of a slump and helped get the traction I needed to find a consistent balanced approach. Just improved my FTP by about 12%, not burnt out and still motivated. :bike: :trophy:

Workouts with 50+ steps for Z2 are pretty much useless with Garmin, so I just ride using IF target and that’s it. As for the rest, indeed, I edit workouts in TP simplifying them after MS. 10 steps of Z2 make no sense outdoors so I just put 1 long and ride on.

Hi Alex, I just recently joined TD. Really cool platform. So far the issue above is the biggest issue for me. Do you know if simplification of workouts is still something that will be updated? I do almost all of my training outdoors, so having a Z2 block to begin, then minimal steps in the middle for structured work (for example 8min threshold blocks, rest, repeat), and then ending with a Z2 block would be great. Right now nearly every workout is unusually complicated with the number of steps. Thank you!

Sorry. To be clear, I see that you can select workouts on a given day that resemble what I am after. That is awesome. But CJ does not seem to provide workouts like that even if I select outdoors. Thank you!

Hi and welcome. Do you mind showing an example of what you are looking for? It’s been traditional to do more block style workouts yet Coach Andrea recommends progressions, like z2-z4 progressions rather than straight z4 blocks, but you can build block workouts too in CJ if you click on custom. It’s also very easy. If you are talking about secondary work (the part at the end) having variability outdoor should remove most of that, but we need to improve that even more. If you send a screenshot of what you mean it can help.

Hi Alex, thanks for the prompt reply! So the top workout is what I am referring to and the bottom workout is what I added (my usual preference for outdoor work – just much easier when you cannot space out on a trainer to not have to think about each 1-2min step). By “adding” a workout in CJ, do you mean adding workout to my cal after a plan has been made by CJ? I understand CJ to be the custom plan builder – just trying to understand the lingo so I get where you are coming from. Thank you again!

Yes, we need to simplify outdoor even more. I agree.

Left is standard progressions. The right is “blocks.” You have threshold #1 which is shorter time in threshold. If you change to 5 or 7 it will be longer blocks of intensity. See below.

Thank you, Alex! To be sure, where should I select that 5 or 7? Should I use custom/harder blocks instead of the serious italian to achieve this (i.e. change the primary sequence to 5 or 7?)? Appreciate it! Platform is really cool and a great price-point/companion app to TP for analysis.

Whether you increase the intensity to five or seven partially depends on your timeline for goals and partially depend depends on how it feels. It also depends on what you’ve been doing previously.. I was suggesting five or seven based on the workout you provided it looked more difficult. So serious Italian is SFR threshold, progressions and long ride. You can swap the threshold progressions for threshold blocks. They’re definitely harder.

So personally, I would stick with what you’re doing if you’re not sure and if the feel of workouts feel OK. But focus mainly on those main activities those main intervals outdoors.

As you point out, though we should make outdoors even simpler. I’m gonna work on that, but I don’t know how soon I can get it done. I’m glad you like the platform. Glad you like the pricing.

Thanks Alex. So I got the calendar to reflect more of what I am looking for with regards to structural simplicity in the workouts. However, when I resynced it to TP, it looks like the more “complex” version (indoor?) was somehow synced? Not sure if that is a bug or I missed something. Thanks!

Ok yes the last person just responded. We just modified our outdoor converter. You see it visually there but the the send to TP might not use the new model. We will look. Did you use calenar sync or send to?

Thank you! I used the cal sync feature I believe.

Should be fixed now… thanks for letting us know.

Awesome! Yup appears to be working and did not even need to re sync anything. Thank you!
