A few questions about TD

Long Time TR user, that doesn’t see the value in it anymore… as I mainly use it as a workout player. So wanted to ask some questions, as I’m considering making the switch. I will mainly import Workouts from Trainingpeaks and use TD as a workout player.

  • Does the App support power target Ranges in Slope Mode? E.g. ride in z2 = showing a power target from 150-225 watts, where I can self select my actual output.
  • Does TD import Cadence targets from Trainingpeaks?
  • Can I modify Trainingpeaks Workouts “on the go” in TD?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi, these are great questions/ideas.

  1. Ranges no but if you say do 225w and set slope mode you will see where you are at and but wont’t get any notification if you are out of range. I think it works fine but this is an interesting idea for slope moders  (I like slope moders)
  2. I am not sure on the cadence targets from TP but I think so. I would have to verify or I would prefer to give you a free period to check… I can ask my tester if you want me to figure it out
  3. You can modify TP workout on the go but possibly not in the way you think. You can skip from where you are to the end of a segment, essentially skipping segments, you can also click our + buttons and dynamically add any intervals you want, you also can switch workouts in the middle and merge workouts together. You can add auto-extend workout and you can press ± on the UI to change intensity.

Long time TR user here too, that also uses TD.

Whilst not answering any of your questions, the thing that brought me here is HR+ mode. For Z2 workouts, I am very firmly of the view that controlling HR is better than controlling power and HR+ does just that.

Here is the video

I do still see value in TR, but that is because I have an old legacy price. At the current price, the cost is too high for my use case.

Thanks for the super quick answer Alex!

  1. I like ERG sometimes, but it can be really nice to go slope and just shoot for a range, a bit like outdoors on a garmin workout. But isn‘t a „must“ for me.
  2. That would be great! Would be happy to try it and report back.
  3. No, that sounds exactly like what I‘m looking for. Is there a way to add time
to the current interval as well? With base coming up, sometimes it‘s great to expand those tempo/sst intervals on the spot.

Thanks! I saw that feature and it looks interesting for sure!

I‘m have legacy pricing as well, otherwise I would have moved on a while ago. What festures do you still use/keep you subscribed, if you don‘t mind me asking?

I was planning on asking this question too

AIFTP and, to a lesser extent, RLGL are the two features that keep me there for now.

I do think adaptive plans and the interaction between Progress Levels and FTP works well too (though I am not using a plan just now).

As a workout player, I think TR is pretty much as good as it gets. It just works. The familiarity of the interface after so many years of using it probably sways my view of that a little.

For now, I do my Z2 workouts on TD with HR+. I associate them with a TR workout for AIFTP purposes. I do my “hard” workouts on TR.

As I have mentioned a few times, HR+ is TD’s crown jewel. It is worth the full subscription price on its own and, I say, has an important place in every cyclist’s training.

You can extend current interval as well. The UI for this popup is a bit complicated so it takes time to get comfortable with it. I am trying to see if I can find a simpler way to do this. I will upgrade you later today.

You can be more brutally honest to help him understand anything about the player itself. Obviously lately we have done some major technology upgrades and caused some bugs but this should really disappear and we should be very stable again going forward (like we have been for years). But is there anything about the player itself that he is going to miss switching to TD. I realize familiarity is big and I am sure they do somethings better than us.

If you have spent time on the TR forums (I assume yes) then it’s interesting because I am very good friends with Chad McNeese and gave him free TD account but familiarity and all his note history and workout history in TR, I can’t get him to switch

I don’t think there is anything big and I can think of a couple of things that someone switching from TD to TR would miss(*).

A little one on the UI for the player that I know has already been mentioned - display a low battery warning symbol for connected devices.

Auto pause and auto restart - that is also just a familiarity thing, but I like it.

(*) being able to easily reverse the direction of timers between count down and count up

Maybe if I get you to start doing automated slope intervals for short duration intervals you will become addicted to TD

I don’t know what one of those is, but I’ll give one a try.

Can you link to one here?

Here is an example with a link to a workout. Slope mode for something like this takes some practice.

I will have a go at that sometime in the next week or two and report back.

You don’t have to do this workout obviously… It’s just slope mode for some workouts can be more fun. The key is for short intervals switching to the actual slope first so it gets harder and then adjusting gears to nail the intervals is the key.

Ah, that looks like a neat feature for building certain workouts. So you can predetermine the slope of each interval? Super cool, like an ERG-Mode light, that gives you the freedom to fine tune your power output.

Yes, you can design the slopes. You can click on that link and click clone that workout and edit it and see the exact slopes. But here is what it looks like in our editor

The ERG target is just for visual reference in slope mode. Then when riding you can also make adjustments to the slope. Once you put slope it switches modes.

You’re in control of your own destiny on the slope sections. How hard or easy it is depends upon what slope you selected, your gearing, and cadence.

I’ve mostly only used slope for FTP test type rides, but you could use it for a lot more than that.

It isn’t like ERG where the trainer is holding you accountable to a power, you’re in control instead. In the example shown going in an instant from 4 to 8 degrees is going to kick like a donkey though

Dave

So you will be happy to hear, I just had a pro-cyclist contact me saying he loves my HR+ video and wants to try it out  I have gotten contacted by some of the popular cycling youtubers before but this is the first time a pro contacted me that I know of.
