Best Plan For +60 YO

Hi there,
I am a little bit confused about the plan I should choose, can anyone help ?

My goals ? Remain in shape and fit, maybe a race in Zwift every once in a while and have fun…

More details…

  1. 60 YO (ex amateur runner) in fairly good shape
  2. FTP 148
  3. Willing to train 4/5 hrs per week
  4. No outdoor training (I use a spin bike with power pedals)
  5. Plans already done, Zwift “Build Me Up” and " 10-12wk FTP Builder"

Any help truly appreciated.

Hi Erik,

The bike is a nice way to stay in shape. There are a couple of good plans you can follow. If you use Zwift, I suggest you create a 12 week plan with the help of coach Jack and set an end goal.

Riding the three little sisters for instance. Or set a pr on the epic Kom.

When you ride only indoors your biggest problem will be your long slow distance rides. I suggest you do 2 hours max or do 3x 1 hour with 10 minute breaks in between.

Since you are 60+ you do not want to train to the max with high intensity intervals. You can do them, but don’t overdo them.

Coach Jack knows exactly what you need. Connect your Strava account and Coach Jak will provide you with a tailored program.

Have fun, Coach Robert

Hi Coach,
thanks for you kind answer but I’m still a little bit uncertain about what to do as I don’t have a Strava account and I don’t do strength training…

I build a plan using these two settings: 12 weeks + Fitness Cyclist

Is it ok or should I switch to “The Serious Italian” or maybe “Base+” or something else ???

Your point noted about long slow rides (I cut them to 1.5 hrs while generating the final plan)…

First, I’m just a user not affiliated with TD in any way.

Which build plan you pick is mostly down to personal preference. Fitness Cyclist will have some tempo progression rides, HIIT, and zone 2. The other plans will have a different mix of sessions. If you like the tempo progression and HIIT then the Fitness Cyclist could work well for you.

I looked it up and the Zwift Build Me Up plan is going to have a lot more intensity in it than the Coach Jack stock plans. Did you like the Zwift plan or did it leave you feeling tired?

TD’s perspective is they’ll progress you a bit slower, but you’ll avoid burnout. If you’re used to Zwift intensity then I’d recommend you go to Adjust Intensity and set it to 7 or so. If you’re ok with the rides starting easier then you could go with a lower number, I think the plans will default to level 1.

Hi Dave,
thanks for you kind reply, I’ve got a clearer picture now…

I think I’ll stick to “Fitness Cyclist” for now as my Garmin Connect keeps reminding me that some “High Aerobic Activity” is needed in order to progress (HIIT should help filling what’s missing in my training)…

Got to admit that the Zwift plan was doable but at the end I was feeling tired…
You know what, I have to eradicate the “No Pain-No Gain” way of training from my mind…

I’ll keep intensity to level 1, spend these 12 weeks training with joy and then we will see what happens…

Hi Erik,

It is not uncommon, nor bad if you feel tired at the end of a training block. However, you should feel much better after a week of recovery.

In the programs that Trainer Day creates, you can choose a 3 to 1 or 2 to 1 plan. That one week should give you enough time to recover. I would start with a 3 to 1 and switch to a 2 to 1 if needed.

Have fun, Coach Robert

Be careful listening to Garmin… it will also drive most people into the dirt… It’s more like if it doesn’t kill you it will make you stronger… I think Garmin’s bad advice will help us grow…
