Hi, I tried using HR+ for the first time. I chose a random workout with some intervals. When riding, the target BPM was the same the entire workout, no matter the current interval shown in the graph. It would read “5:00 110 bpm z1” and the next interval would be “5:00 110 bpm z5”. The Watts where self adjusting to keep me on the target bpm. I could manually adjust the target bpm.
My understanding going in to this was that the target HR would automatically adjust according to the intervals, just like in erg mode.
Thank you, that was very kind. I’m still not quite sure how the HR+ thing work. I can’t pick a workout from the app and use HR+ instead of ERG? How do I find HR+ compatible workouts in the app?
If you wanted to switch to HR+ in an erg workout, you would then need to set the HR target for that interval in the ride. You would have to do that for every interval, in real time, during the workout.
Most people use HR+ for steady state workouts. They hit quickstart, hit the HR+ button, set their target bpm and then just pedal.
There aren’t many HR+ workouts in the catalogue.
Partly I think that is because each person needs a specific bpm target, rather than a % target.
The workout creator is quick and easy to use and I would say you can convert most workouts that you like the look of to a HR+ near equivalent.
I did similar custom workouts to target my Zone2 MAF heart rate, as I’m busy base building. Started with 30min, now at 35min, working my way to that hour.
I have also added more stress to make my rate of exertion better, to see how my Zone 2 heart rate reacts and see if I can maintain the 118bpm. This means dropping a gear or 2 and trying to maintain the 118-124 heart rate for my Zone2. I’m not always successful, but I can definitely feel the increase in strength and cadence.
If 118 bpm is the right target, then it should do exactly as you intend.
Keeping cadence as constant as you can (in fact keeping eveything as constant as you can) will help keep HR steady. Cadence changes during the workout can cause spikes that happen more quickly, and can be larger, than a lot of people expect.
Pushing out the duration is the absolutely the best objective for this type of work.
As you do more of these workouts you should start to see that you can 1) pedal for longer without your power dropping at the HR target and 2) produce more power at the HR target.
