Zone 2 with the MAF 180 Formula or 65% of max HR?

I am 22 years old, and my maximum heart rate is 199 beats per minute. My question regarding Zone 2 training is: Should I train based on the Maximum Aerobic Function (MAF) with a maximum heart rate of 158 beats per minute, or should I follow the 65% rule, which corresponds to 130 beats per minute? I don’t understand if this significant gap between the two methods is normal or which one I should use. It would be nice if someone could explain this to me.

I think you are probably best off with the talk test.

I think talk test is best too (or cross reference it at least). I think you are more likely to be closer to 150-158. 65% seems low in your case. 65% is the ultra conservative value. It’s funny I remember seeing your username from a long time ago as my best friend in highschool was Daniel47… He was 47 before it was a slightly popular (in the 80s) number.

A couple resources:

I’m not necessarily advocating for San Milan zone 2, but there’s quite a bit of material out there for it.
